About The Downstairs Lounge

Spinning rare and precious grooves, mostly of a British showbiz or comedy nature. The Downstairs Lounge is a haven for neglected and forgotten records, which for our younger readers are recordings of sound and music etched for posterity in polyvinyl chloride. Comedy records, novelty records, and all points in between. Some are obscure, some are rare, some are just plain annoying, but we play them all and if necessary we lock the doors so that no-one can escape.

I see that you have a copy of the LP by wendy craig 1970 in front of the children. Is this the only copy you have or do you know where I can obtain another?. I have been searching high and low for this for years!

    Hi,

Neat piece on John Inman you have. 🙂

I run an official “Are You Being Served?” site at:

    http://www.aybscentral.com

There are a lot of images and info pertaining to all the cast members including John Inman..

There is also a lot of other stuff for the AYBS fan including a blog, forum and an online role playing game.

    Enjoy!

Set in his musical context , Benny was a genius with puns and his songs stand the test of time. He was of his time , yet the hounding at the end of his career was cruel.

What an absolutely brilliant blog. I’ve only just discovered it and I suppose I must credit my family who are watching The Voice while I pointedly surf the net on my Kindle. Looking up to see ‘Boy’ George sporting the most preposterous titfer I couldn’t help blurting out that he looked like a Diddyman, and was then required to illustrate what I meant. And lo I found on Google images the cover of Ken Dodd’s Magnum Opus on your site which led me to the downstairs lounge.

From a cursory glance, your blog is no less than magnificent. Absolute genius, in fact. And bloody funny.

Consider yourself bookmarked my friend and keep up the good work.

    Regards
